Taking from the airline industry that tells us to put on our oxygen mask before helping others put theirs on, let’s start with: protect yourself and your assets before protecting others. By assets I mean your home, vehicle, any other property, but also your loved ones.
Any protection charms or spiritually protective actions you take for yourself, can be taken for those around you if you deem it necessary.
And any protection measures you perform for your living space can be done in your workplace or your loved ones homes, as well.
It is fundamentally critical that you employ protection measures spiritually before undertaking any form of spiritual offense or defense these days. Do not assume that everyone will play nice when fighting for justice and taking down evil people clinging to power.
I am working hard on coming up with a running list of those evil people, and I’ll perhaps start a post where we can call out anyone from elected officials at all levels of government to CEOs to media shills that need to be held accountable spiritually for their crimes against humanity, but for now, let’s ensure we are surrounding ourselves by adequate protective mechanisms to suit our needs.
Spiritual Protection 101
Regardless of your faith or chosen spiritual system, you will need protection. Even if you believe nothing, you need to believe that nothing so fucking hard that the something that others believe is rendered inert, if you catch my drift.
For those who do have a belief system based on some form of deity or spirit veneration, regardless of how many deities you choose to work with, worship, commune with, or venerate, the easiest and most straightforward protection measures are:
Regular banishing (of your space and your person)
Regular protection charms or trinkets of some kind (worn on the person)
Banishing Happens First
Entire books have been written on how to banish and different methods of doing so, and I will not attempt to summarize them all in half a post.
The basics, however, are: Banishing consists of removing harmful energies, spirits or other entities from around you or from your physical space. If you do this consistently and cultivate a space that resists the presence of harmful or negative energy in the first place, you are more than halfway there.
Banishing can be as simple as saying a prayer in your chosen faith throughout each room in your home or workplace and over each threshold to the outside of your space (think exterior facing doors and windows), but say it with your whole chest. Prayers are spells and these have no impact if you simply recite them without visualizing them working.
Other methods of banishing (not all encompassing), which I will not go into detail in this initial post include:
floor washes
suffumigation (using smoke from burning plants to banish)
incense
essential oil or plant-extract sprays
sound (singing bowls, drums, music, instruments, singing, humming)
dancing
The most important rule of any action taken is get worked up. Pour energy into it - and it doesn’t have to always be love and light. Humans have a broad spectrum of emotion and they are ALL valid. If you’re angry that someone is harming your friends, channel that and make it fuel your requests. Scream it into existence. You are made of power and energy.
Which Deities?
What deities you choose are up to you, as long as you do not encroach on a closed spiritual practice that you are not initiated into. If you have to ask if you are initiated, you are not. That is the rule.
Most practices outside of Voodoo/Vodou, Hoodoo, Santeria, and the majority of African and Native American practices are open, however, always always do a simple google search about a deity or spirit before calling out to them. The last thing you want is to cause offense when you need protection most.
Even though I am a practicing pagan, I have a relationship with Mary and recite the Hail Mary prayer each morning before beginning meditation, journaling, and contacting any other spirits. I feel her presence radiating love and compassion, and reminding me I am safe.
While Mary is often seen as a Catholic-oriented feminine source of compassion, she is also a vicious swinger of the sword of protection, if you so choose to call up on this aspect of her. She does not only answer the call of Christians, either.
Which spells or prayers work for banishing?
These do not need to be complex and can be literally any words that have meaning to you and that you say fervently and with intention.
There are a number of Psalms that can be used to banish or you can also stand on your thresholds and state that these are sacred and none shall enter that mean you ill will. I like to recite whatever banishing phrases I use at least 3 times, with increasing intensity.
An example I have used is:
“none shall enter that mean me harm,
shred them, bleed them, sound the alarm.
So mote it be”
Substitute ‘so mote it be’ with ‘amen,’ or ‘may it be so,’ or any other phrase to signal your words are active and the instruction is complete. Also, yes, my incantations are vicious because my house is FAFO territory.
Or, simply state with conviction whatever words feel right to you. There does not need to be a complicated rhyme or an obscure refrain here. Your intent and energy behind your words are the most important part. Pour your anger into these to set them on fire energetically.
You can follow this up by hanging a religious ornament or item over the doors and windows if that feels appropriate to you. Or, you can pour a line of salt or ashes of burned herbs or incense across the thresholds. I will write more in depth about protective charms and wards for the home in a future post. There are some great books on this available online, as well.
Any banishing you do of your home or living space should be done regularly, including if you are adding anything afterward that is meant to be protective (these are often referred to as wards and wards need to be refreshed on a regular basis - at least monthly).
Don’t know what to say or just feel weird shouting at your doorways? Play an uplifting song or ring a bell through your space. I have a friend who walks through each room with a gong and beats on it and shouts ‘Gong gong means be gone!’ So, you know, whatever means something to you.
Now, let’s talk about your personal body. Banishing your personal space (you and the space directly surrounding your body) should be done daily, and you can do it as often as you need. It doesn’t need to take long, and can be very quick and simple once you create a system that works for you.
You can perform an actual banishing ritual, such as the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, or any of its variations, or you can simply take deep breaths in each of the 4 cardinal directions, drawing in clean and bright white air into your body and breathing out stagnant gray air, along with whatever thoughts you wish to let go.
I find that on some days, I need to do this multiple times a day as I deal with certain people that are difficult, or when I encounter non-stop media that focuses on negative events.
Don’t forget about online banishing, too. Almost immediately starting with the day before the most recent inauguration, it seemed that no matter how hard I tried to avoid media and especially social media, it was just everywhere. People like to misery farm. Banishing these people by blocking, unfollowing, or muting is good for your mental health.
Protection charms come next
Charms are simply objects you assign a purpose and intent to. Wearing a cross to represent one’s belief in Jesus is a charm as much as carrying a bag of herbs to attract prosperity is.
Whatever item you choose to be your protective charm should be something you will have on your person reasonably at all times. If you don’t wear jewelry or its not something you want to leave on in the shower, that’s understandable. But choose something that you are almost always going to have on you, at least when you are outside the protections you lay around your living space. A keychain might be appropriate, or a stone you always carry in your pocket or purse.
You can make it as inobtrusive as you need, depending on how open you are about your spiritual practices, as well.
You can also make multiple charms depending on how advanced you need these protections to be.
One simple charm can be constructed to meet basic all-encompassing protection needs in a fairly straightforward manner, but, if you’re like me and you want not only protection, but to create a spiritually aggressive component that will ensure someone knows not to fuck with you again, you may want to create a hex charm that will activate under certain circumstances. This goes beyond this post, however, I am open to teaching this if anyone is interested.
I personally recommend you go with a necklace or bracelet, as these can be hidden under clothing or can look as though they are merely mundane accessories, and nobody will suspect anything otherwise.
To Invoke a Deity or Not?
This is up to you, and if you follow a faith that prays to deities or other spirits, including saints, angels, or demons, then I recommend you dedicate a charm to whomever or whatever is considered an aggressive and formidable defender of those who call to them.
I also recommend that if you do this, and this is a spirit you do not already have a working relationship of regular veneration, prayer or other mutual understanding, you come ready to the request with an appropriate offering (please use google and figure out what is appropriate - it doesn’t have to be expensive, just know what food, drink or substances you should not give to this spirit at least).
If this is a new connection you are building for the first time, be prepared to continue this relationship for the duration of the time you are practicing this, or until you and that spirit mutually decide the relationship is no longer necessary.
If you expect to make this request once and expect forever after protection for no other effort on your end, I think you will likely find that this will be a short-lived relationship.
You can dedicate a charm to just this spirit, or you can dedicate a general protection charm with other layers of specific protection and then add this spirit’s connection to it. Whatever makes sense for you.
If this is a spirit you have a connection to, you can say whatever prayer is most fitting, or you can call to that spirit (remember, fervently, with feeling and without fear; be confident they are listening and answering your calls) and state your request.
Hold the item in your hand as you do this, and envision pouring this request and connection into the item.
Envision it having a direct energetic connection to that spirit, like a bright energetic cord that is there at all times. This can include chanting, praying, singing, or deep trance meditative states.
Once you feel this item is charged with energy, keep it with you at all times.
I recommend recharging it a minimum of monthly, but if you feel you need it more often, then do so. Recharging can be achieved by repeating the petition or request and reinvigorating the energetic cord connecting your charm to that spirit.
For instance, Archangel Michael is a commonly prayed to protective spirit because he is known to be a warrior and protector of those in need, especially in spiritual attacks. You can find charms or jewelry dedicated to Michael all over the place, and very inexpensively at your local metaphysical stores and botanicas. I would consider him non-denominational, even if you are not Christian, many Pagans also create charms or amulets tied to the Archangels.
Regardless of who the item is representing that you purchase, I recommend you still create the connection via prayer/chant and request even if the item you purchase says it has been blessed or ‘fixed up.’ These are often just things that people claim so that they can charge you extra. You don’t need a priest or a witch to do that for you.
Non-Denominational
If you are not invoking a spirit or deity, but simply creating a protective charm for yourself that is derived from something else - your own innate power as a human extension of the divine; the four elemental powers of air, fire, water, and earth; the sun and the moon; your deceased grandmother who always has your back from the afterlife; literally whatever it is that you believe in and can energetically tie to your charm - make sure you mean it.
When you want to be protected, you have to fervently believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that whatever you have called to protect you is stronger than whatever you need protection from. Follow the same steps outline above, but substitute whatever forces you are requesting assistance from for any spirit or deity.
Now, I am speaking specifically spiritually right now. Please do not create a protection charm and then walk into oncoming traffic. These charms are meant to act as a barrier to any negative energy sent your way, intentionally or unintentionally, by others who will disagree with you and even try to harm you for speaking out and resisting.
Yes, people do send unintentional negative energy to others. Some people are what you could call psychic projectors without realizing it. They think a thing and its almost as if they think it into existence. And if the thing they think is that they wish you’d fall and break your leg, your protection charm needs to be able to block that.
And then the intentional negative energy sent by those who know what they are doing is another story. These are other spiritual or magickal practitioners that disagree with you and are petty enough to try to harm you for your actions and beliefs. These people exist and if you’re not willing to take steps to protect yourself, I recommend you do not engage in this form of resistance.
Below, I have a collection of random things I purchased to make jewelry out of and can easily turn into discreet and mundane-looking protection charms.
The two necklaces are ones I wear all the time already, one dedicated to the Norse goddess Freya, who is associated with love, but also war, and the other represents the sword of clarity, as well as boundaries.
Being that I already wear both of these, they will be re-dedicated to serve as protective charms in a new way, and the other 4 items will either be added to a bracelet I will weave with knots, or perhaps used to create something else I will wear often or carry with me at all times.
I know that my activism will attract the attention of some I wish not to attract, and that is unfortunately the reality we face when we speak up against tyranny and fascism. We must accept that we will bring eyes upon us that previously were not.
I hope this gives you somewhere to start from, and I will be open to answering any specific questions you have in the comments or chat. If you already have made protective charms and have a system you like, please use that (and feel free to share with others!). There are many right ways to do this, I have just provided a simplified version here.
If you need help with constructing your charm out of items or with what to say while you’re charging it, or any other subject like home protection, please also reach out. I want to help everyone lay this basic framework before we get into the nitty gritty.
I was also thinking a semi-regular meetup online might be helpful for those who need a little more instruction on some of these things, or even to concentrate our energy toward a singular focal point we wish to affect.
Blessed be!
I posted this in another thread: Between this message, listening to Bishop Budde's message to Trump, et al; and Sarah Longwell's podcast from this morning, I am hopeful that the focus can be directed toward policy issues, transgressions, and outright illegal actions. The theater redirects area a known tactic. Blow them off! They are the shinny trinket, the squirrel, the whatever induces the political ADHD/ADD/Obessive Compulsive Disorder reflex in those who fear being disenfranchised. There are methods for action and methods for protection. I like your integrative approach. Stay on track. It will work. Pay attention, people. The three ladies are showing us a pathway.
